Sustained action taken to reduce or eliminate long-term risk to people and property from hazards and their effects.
What is a Hazard Mitigation Plan?
A hazard mitigation plan is a community’s roadmap for identifying risks and vulnerabilities from natural and human-caused disasters and taking steps to reduce those risks before they occur. The plan must be updated and approved by FEMA every five years to maintain eligibility for FEMA hazard mitigation funding. The HMP is a strategic document NOT regulatory.
